ASO HACKS
What are the ASO hacks to learn from?
- App titles:
App titles play a strong role in rankings which makes it crucial to have keywords within an app’s title. Apple allows 30 characters while Google allows 50 characters, though the role of titles differs in both. Since Google only shows an app’s icon and title, the title should clearly explain app functionality as well, whereas this may not be as relevant for App Store due to the presence of screenshots.

- Subtitle:
Both algorithms use subtitle keywords to index the app in search. Because keyword density is an important ranking factor, repeating a keyword in the title and subtitle may help in Play Store search. The same strategy does not work for the App Store because this is not accounted for in their algorithm. Slotomania by Playtika is a good example of App Store keyword optimization.
- Long description:
Long descriptions, which are used to explain an app’s features and benefits, have no effect on App Store rankings but are very important in Play Store rankings. For the same reason, descriptions for Android apps should adhere to SEO best practices and maintain a keyword density of 2–3 percent for the most important keywords, whereas for the App Store, you can creatively discuss your value proposition that will entice users to download the app.
- Screenshots:
Because they appear during the keyword search, screenshots play a significant role in App Store conversions. In iOS, screenshot design must capture user attention and enable downloads. However, aside from branded searches, screenshots do not appear anywhere in the Play Store.

- Backlinks:
Backlinks are more important in the Play Store because Google considers the number of backlinks to your app’s webpage to determine its authority, which results in higher rankings. Backlinks can be avoided during App Store ASO (for the time being), but they are still important in terms of branding and overall app marketing strategy.
